Seattle Laser Fleet
One of the most active one design fleets around is the Seattle Laser Fleet. Many great sailors have come from this fleet, which started in 1975. The fleet hosts regular weekly events in year-round, alternating between Shilshole and Sail Sandpoint. The fleet is more than welcoming of junior sailors and has even done starts for Opti sailors that want to get in some weekly racing.
There are also several bigger events that the fleet turns out for including NOOD, PSSR, PSSC, Turkey Bowl, and the Frigid Digit Regatta. The Seattle Laser Fleet draws sailors from throughout District 22, with sailors from Bellingham, Portland, Eugene, and Vancouver regularly participating in their events.
BC Youth Sailing Circuit
Just like the NWYRC there is a youth circuit in British Columbia. Some of the best youth racing in North America takes place just north of the border. Youth sailors from Oregon and Washington are more than welcome to participate. The NWYRC works with the BC circuit to avoid conflicting schedules, so that sailors can participate on both youth circuits if they please.
PHRF Racing
PHRF racing is very popular in the Northwest, especially with adults. These larger racing boats come in all shapes and sizes, so a handicap system (PHRF) was developed to score dissimilar boats competing in the same race. Racing might be done on a windward/leeward course, around an island, or from Point A to Point B. Owners are almost always on the lookout for new crew members, since most boats sail with more than five people, some as many as fifteen. Contact your local yacht club for a crew wanted list, or try showing up on the dock with your sailing gear ready to go.
